Flowers Gay Schools mark 40 years with events

Forty years in the life of any institution is no mean an achievement.

And more especially when the years have been used to impact the lives of hundreds of children in the community and country as a whole, such years should be gracefully marked and remembered.

It is for this reason and many others that the management, staff and students and even parents of the Flowers Gay Schools in Cape Coast have lined up a series of activities and events to mark the school’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

Arguably one of the finest schools in the Cape Coast metropolis, Flowers Gay Schools continues to chart the part of quality education incorporated with its sound biblical values and continue to touch and impact the lives of many children in and around the Cape Coast Metropolis.

The name

“Lord Jesus hard a garden full of flowers gay

Where you and I can gather posies all day

There angels sing in jubilant ring, with dulcimers and lutes

And harps and cymbals, trumpets, pipes

And gentle, soothing flutes

It was from this Christmas carol that the founder of Flowers Gay Schools, Mrs Selimy Gifty Quaynor of blessed memory found the inspiration to name the school.

Humble beginnings

From its humble and modest beginning 40 years ago, the school has grown to become a strong educational complex in the metropolis.

Mrs Quaynor, affectionately called “mummy” with her love for children bubbling in her heart conceived the thought of establishing a school in Ghana while she was in the United Kingdom years ago and initiated a hunt for toys.

Play and Nursery School

After relocating to Ghana, she established the Play and Nursery Schools on 7th January 1980 with three children.

The number increased to 13 by the end of its first term and has since continued to increase in numbers.

Primary School

The primary section of the school commenced in 1987 after seven years.

After 13 years, the school moved from third ridge where it was located to its present location.

With hard work and tenacity, the school began its Junior High School section in 1994 with eleven pupils.

With an excellent performance of distinction for its first eight pupils at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) the school has never looked back.

Motto and Products

Live up to its motto, “By their fruits, ye shall know them” the school has gone ahead to over the years produce products in all fields including medicine, engineering, teaching communications among other areas contributing immensely to community and national development.

The Proprietor of the School, Mr Kwete Quaynor, said the school’s unique role in nurturing pupils with excellent academic standards and biblical and moral values was the schools trademark.

He said these were evident in the products of the school all over the world.

He said the school would continue to cling to its high academic standards and the values which had propelled the school to the great heights it is now.

Activities for anniversary

Activities lined up for the celebrations include a float through the principal streets of Cape Coast which was held last Saturday, a clean-up exercise and a health screening exercise.

The school also presented medical consumables to the Adisadel Health Centre as part of celebrations.

Mr Quaynor said the presentation to the hospital was to give back to the health facility which always served as the first point of call for medical emergencies for the school.

Others activities include peer coaching and counseling section, debate and quizzes, an open day and exhibition, fun fair and games and a founder’s day service to climax activities.

Indeed, the light that was light at the garage of a home in the third ridge of Cape Coast 40 years ago indeed keeps shining.
