Don’t leave babies for others to feed — Dr Asibey
A Specialist Paediatrician at the Techiman Holy Family Hospital, Dr Jacqueline Asibey, has advised lactating mothers not to leave the feeding of their babies in the hands of other people who will not have the needed patience to feed them.
According to her, feeding of these babies should usually last between 20 to 30 minutes at a time.
“This means one has to be very patient when he or she is feeding babies.
Besides, babies who are between six months and two years and have been introduced to additional meals must be fed four to five times a day with two snacks in addition,” Dr Asibey stated.
Dr Asibey made this known during a clinic held for children of head potters (Kayayei) and market women at the Sunyani Wednesday Market to assess the nutritional status of their children and teach them the right way to feed babies.
The clinic, which was organised by the Paediatric Society of Ghana in collaboration with a Techiman-based grain processing company, Sahel Grains, formed part of activities of this year’s annual national conference of the society held in Sunyani.
Dr Asibey told The Mirror that 32 out of the 40 children who were screened during the exercise were very healthy while those identified with special paediatric problems were referred to the Sunyani Regional Hospital for treatment.

She advised lactating mothers to exclusively breastfeed their babies for a period of six months before introducing them to other nutritious balanced diets.
The specialist paediatrician also advised lactating mothers to be conscious of hygiene when feeding their babies since that was the surest way to ensure that they are healthy.
She said the society partnered with Sahel Grains Company for the exercise because of the hygienic manner it packaged its products and the processes the products went through to monitor the level of aflatoxins and advised mothers to use such products to prepare meals for babies.
