University student wins CEGENSA writing contest

The competition was held to mark the 10th anniversary of CEGENSA which was established to “ensure that gender equity is enshrined in all aspects of the institutional culture of the University and Ghanaian society through high quality research, teaching, learning and advocacy.”

Nana Yaa Asantewaa Asante-Darko’s story titled Bean Cakes was described by reviewers as deserving first place because it was “interesting, a refreshing read, told from the perspective of a young girl, written with vivid imagery and innocence.”

The second prize was won by Margaret Adomako. Her story was titled Noon and it was about albinism. It was described as, “An African Cinderella story with a twist which had a strong female protagonist and a strong theme of advocacy for the rights of albinos.”

Fear of the Ring by Ruthfirst Eva Ayande took the third prize. This story was described by the reviewers as ‘very modern,’ the story successfully brought together the themes of feminism, artificial insemination, career women and witchcraft.

The fourth prize was awarded to Sarah Faakor Toseafa for Rima which chronicles the story of a young girl who wants to and eventually does become a rapper.  The reviewers described this story as “a sweet piece which was witty and refreshing.”

The story that won fifth prize was titled The Last Girl Cut and was submitted by Awo Aba Odua Gyan.  The reviewers were impressed with the author’s ability to use humour to address a harrowing experience of Female Genital Mutilation.

Other activities lined up for the 10th anniversary celebration include a night to celebrate women in the sciences which comes off on Friday, September 30 and an international conference to be held from October 27 to October 29.
