Sankofa tells the story of a pair of confrontational and argumentative professors of the University of Africa, Prof Hardy and Prof Danso, who believe their academic qualifications and intelligence give them the right to ride roughshod over everyone including members of their own families.

Their sharp tongues and no-nonsense approach to life has caused a lot of damage to the lives of students unfortunate enough to be in their class and to the extent of affecting even their own children and spouses.

However, during their stay at the Oriental Hotel in Australia to present an award, they are taught a series of valuable lessons which causes them to soberly reflect on how their actions have affected the lives of others.

Typical of Roverman production plays, curtains rose at precisely 6:30pm and the entire play run without a hitch. Although there were a few times where the actors seem to mix-up their lines, they still managed to recover in time.

Uncle Ebo Whyte has made it a point to merge entertainment with social commentary and this was obvious in Sankofa.

Some themes explored in the play included the ills of the educational system and the dangers of parents pressuring their children to conform to their expectations.

For the most part, the audience at the National Theatre wholeheartedly enjoyed the play and engaged with the actors on stage.

There were numerous times during the play where the audience interjected and joined the actors in finishing some of their lines.

The antics of the two professors, Prof Hardy and Prof Danso, were a delight to behold as they executed their roles to perfection.

The pair did a good job of portraying the rigid and unforgiving attitude the public has come to expect from authorities in academia.
