The main celebrant of the occasion, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, the Omanhene of the Essikado Traditional Area, other chiefs and his elders, the Western Regional Deputy Minister, Mr Alfred Ekow Gyan, the rest of the dignitaries sat perplexed and in disbelief as the woman thrilled with her dance moves.

While other members of the audience stood dumb-founded, wondering how the aged woman, who received monetary gifts from the audience could move her body so well in time with the music, others  just  kept clapping and cheering her on.

Madam Amissah was not the only one who amazed members of the audience. It was a delight to watch and listen to gender balanced group from T&G play local songs such as Lumba’s Yentie Obia, the national anthem among others.  They also moved guests at the launch who either nodded their heads or tapped their feet.

Kuntum (Kundum) festival is celebrated every year to unite the people to their traditions, values and heritage as well create greater social cohesion and peace.

This year’s celebration is on the theme, ‘‘Our Environment, Our Life: African Traditions and the Preservation of our Ecology.’’

In his address, Nana Nketsia V pointed out that, anyone who tried to be an obstacle between the people in the diaspora, such as the visiting T&G of African descent, was an enemy of Africa, adding that there was the need for Africans to come together to develop their countries without relying on the ‘whiteman’.

The Deputy Regional Minister Mr Alfred Gyan noted that “traditional practices depicted that African societies were conscious of the need to protect their environment in the past”.

That, he said was seen in the celebration of festivals, where people come together to commemorate historic and past events and also plan for development and protection of their communities.

Madam Charlotte Otuwa Odum, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sekondi-Takoradi disclosed that, “ the assembly seeing the dire effects of improper waste disposal by the citizenry and their irresponsible attitude to preserve the environment, had collaborated with the judicial service to expedite sanitation related cases brought before it”.
