Globe productions, The Mirror show Christmas in April today

It means something unsual is happening and playwright Latif Abubakar and his production house, Globe Productions are poised to reveal to theatre enthusiasts why Papa Bronya is out there when Christmas is some eight months away with their new play Christmas in April.

Christmas In April  opens today,  and continues showing tomorrow, Sunday, April 28 at the Accra International Conference Centre. There will be two shows each day at 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm respectively.

Typical of his plays, Latif weaves comedy, music and dance together to educate patrons on issues affecting the society and Christmas in April is a potpourri of all these yet unique.

The play tells the story of four ‘broke’ guys who are tricked into a business with the intention of migrating to the United States of America. Soon, they realise they have been scammed, and that the promised America travel is fake.

To make matters worse, their leader is arrested and the guys escape, only to run into Father Christmas. Confused and shocked, they wonder if they have encountered a ghost, a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer or a true Santa Claus.

Answers to how Santa Claus appears in April can be found in the play which is Latif Abubakar’s 13th production. According to him, Christmas in April is a kicker to a number of events marking the production house’s 10th milestone.

“The growing interest of patrons and the positive impact of our plays on the society have motivated us to continue with the tri-annual performances and regional tours.

“We hope to touch more lives in the years ahead with an improvement in the quality and hilarity of our plays”.

Some of the plays that have come from the stables of Globe Productions include I Can’t Think Far, which is about peaceful elections; Saints and Sinners which highlights the menace of galamsey; Men Don Die touches on road safety and Judas and Delilah centres on health and first aid tips Christmas in April, a ticketed event, is a partnership between Globe Productions and The Mirror newspaper.
