Topic for discussion was ‘Globalising Ghanaian Fashion: The Importance of Global Branding and Self-Identifying as a Ghanaian or African Designer in a Globalized Fashion Industry.’

Moderated by the Director of EA Media Productions, Esther Armah, the panel of experts that led the discussion comprised   Aisha Ayensu (Creative Director and CEO of Christie Brown), Abrima Erwiah (Founder of Studio One Eighty Nine), Mrs

Yvonne Ntiamoah (Head of the Fashion Design Department  at Radford University College) and Aretha Amma Sarfo-Kantanka (Founder of Global Fusion Productions Inc.).

The panel gave various interesting definitions of  ‘globalisation. ’  Amma Sarfo-Kantanka, for instance, explained  the term as “how we tell our unique Ghanaian fashion story to the world in its historic context, by including  icons like Chez Julie from the 1950s and 1960s and Kofi Ansah  from our more recent history.”

Aisha Ayensu also stressed the fact that excellence in Ghanaian fashion that captures the eyes of the world was possible because she was there as an example of a first-rate designer  who neither studied nor lived abroad.

Mrs  Ntiamoah  called for  a better utilisation of the talents of fashion graduates after the completion of  their National Service.

The panelists agreed on the need for the various  fashion-related associantins in the country to come together under a unified umbrella  to ensure effective growth of the fashion industry here.

There was time for everyone around to ask questions and make suggestions on the way forward for Ghanaian fashion. On the whole, the second Fashion Forum Ghana discussion event was a success and several participants said they were looking forward to the next one.

Fashion  Forum Ghana (FFG) was founded by designer and public relations practitioner, Makeba Boateng as a platform for intelligent discourse on ways to move Ghana’s fashion industry to new heights.
