Emancipation Day to focus on youth
The theme for the celebration is: ‘Our Heritage, Our Strength’, with a sub-theme of ‘Empowering Our Youth through Pan-African Culture.’

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, stated at the launch that African people on the continent and in the Diaspora shared not only a common history, but a common destiny.
“In the spirit of Pan-Africanism, we are entreating the youth of African descent to come together and strengthen the bond of solidarity and remember that unity is vital to the economic, social and political progress of the people of African descent,” she said.
The 2016 Emancipation Day celebration starts with wreath-laying ceremonies on Thursday, July 28, at the Du Bois Memorial Centre, the George Padmore Research Library and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.
There will also be a variety of entertainment at the Cape Coast Chapel Square preceded by a procession of Asafo companies and masqueraders from the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium to the Chapel Square on Friday, July 29.
On Saturday, July 30, Assin Praso, in the Central Region, will take centre stage with a durbar of chiefs and people to commemorate the event. The climax of the Emancipation Day will be on August 1, with a grand durbar of chiefs and people at Assin-Manso.
