Anas features in Nkrumah play at National Theatre today

The Second Coming of Nkrumah, the producers say, is the story of the foundation of freedom in Africa, and the legendary character that spurred the struggle for a free continent, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the great son of Africa.

Amazingly, Nkrumah’s second coming in the play is heralded by the rhetoric of today such as the famous pink sheets, the tweaaas, the boom booms, all die be die, the dumsor dumsor, waawaa, e dey bee keke, and woyomisation of the economy all of which have threatened to divide the nation.

That is where the famous Ghanaian investigative reporter Anas Aremeyaw Anas comes in. He  is tasked by President Nkrumah to undertake an undercover investigation. What will his reaction be and what will he do?

For the first time, according to producers, the reclusive  Anas Aremeyaw Anas will be on stage to play his own character and may even reveal one trick or two about how he goes about his work which has won him a huge reputation.

One fascinating aspect of this play is that it involves characters who just don’t play roles as our former presidents, but act, look and speak like them (Nkrumah, Hilla Liman, Rawlings, Kuffour, Atta Mills) including the current president John Mahama.

The roles for the famous Governor Arden Clark and Queen Elizabeth during the Gold Coast will also be acted by two British citizens currently in town.

The main aim or objective of such a play, the producers say, is to provide an electrifying and delightful platform not only for patrons to be entertained and educated about. The play has been timed to coincide with  the 57th Ghana Independence anniversary celebrations today March 6, 2014, with two shows, 4pm and 8pm.

In the past five years writer and producer, Latif Abubakar has produced plays at the National Theatre that have gained good reviews, plus an interview with BBC World Service.

These plays have included Romantic Nonsense, You May Kiss the Corpse, Gallery of Comedies and Thank God for Idiots.

Today’s The Second Coming of Nkrumah is presented by Globe Productions in partnership with Graphic Showbiz, National Theatre and Alomo Bitters.
