The award will go to the comic on the continent who has contributed the most to the African comedy industry, and voting will be open to only comedians from the African continent.

The other comedians invited to the event included Bright Okpocha aka Basketmouth (Nigeria), Ndangi Iileka (Namibia), Leonel Mendes (Mozambique), Phenyo Phaladi aka Phenyo the Master (Botswana), Mdura (Swaziland), Tongai Makawa (Zimbabwe), Tshepo “Masapo” Mpiti (Lesotho) and Mbeu ‘Snooze’ Kambuwa (Malawi).

The comedians were also invited to be part of the main awards show which was held on on Saturday, 3 September, and also had the honour of presenting awards to their South African comedy comrades on stage.

“The Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards are all about elevating the art of comedy. The African continent has produced so many leading comics and we want to reach out and close the distance in this network, so that African comedy starts to show up on the world’s radar,” cofounder of SCCA, John Vlisma, said.

He added that, “we have never had a comedy gathering of this calibre on the continent, the SCCA’s has unprecedented potential to make new connections, foster collaboration and make comedy boundaries fall away.

“ Comedy and humour have been a part of Savanna’s DNA since the brand’s inception, and has become synonymous with Savanna’s style and tone.

In an interview with Showbiz, David Aglah said it was an honour to be part of the prestigious awards and lauded the initiative of SCCA for including the Savanna Pan African Comic Award category.

He said events such as these afford comedy acts across the continent the opportunity to meet, interact and foster collaboration among themselves.

“We need more of such events across the continent, considering how much we stand to benefit from networking and collaborating among ourselves,” he said.
