DJ Vyrusky - I am a go getter

Today, Vyrusky is one of the best DJs in the country. He was recently adjudged the Overall Best DJ of the Year at the Ghana DJ Awards, a position that has been enjoyed by Joy FM’s DJ Black for the past three years.

“I have always believed that God has better plans for us. As human, I had created my own future and was working hard to achieve it but today, I’m more than content at being a Disc Jockey and I’m very proud of that,” a confident DJ Vyrusky told Showbiz in the studios of Starr FM on Monday.

From a “privileged background, channeled” as he puts it, the old student of St Thomas Acquinas Senior High School in Accra said it’s quite unfortunate that Djing, which has become a huge global industry is still struggling for recognition in Ghana since many believe it doesn’t pay.

According to him, if players within the sector are able to brand themselves well, they will make a lot of money.

“The annual earnings of famous DJs around the world like Carvin Haris and Craze is big and I’m sure they make more money than most of the well-respected professions around the world.

“In our part of the world, disc jockeying as a profession is gradually being accepted and as a stakeholder, I think we need to do better rebranding to attract gigs that will make us earn good money,” the DJ for Starr Drive hosted by Giovani and Anita Erskine on week days added.

As a human institution and a growing industry, Vyrusky, the official DJ of MzVee and Shatta Wale said it will be unhealthy for his colleagues to rival one another when such energy channelledinto pushing for better conditions which would be beneficial for all.

“Yes, there might be competition because even siblings compete among themselves. The industry is still growing and it will be unfortunate if we envy each other because of success. Well, I don’t see anyone as a competitor but myself. I have always set the standard and always want to be a better person than I was yesterday. That has contributed greatly to my success in the industry,” he stated.

At a tender age, the ‘church boy, developed a passion for music when he played the church drums. His skill as a drummer won him a lot of admiration at the various churches where he offered free services with his talent.

After many years and finally at the University of Ghana where he read  Business Administration, his encounter with a friend, Rexford who was his co-member of the Chosen Vessel Choir(CUC) choir on campus will shape his life.

The winner of the Discovery of the Year award at the 2013 DJ Awards developed the art of DJing which became his new love aside his studies and his principle of always seeking the best in the face of trials saw him rise to be the favourite student DJ on campus.

It has taken DJ Vyrusky years of practise playing for friends to establish himself as a force to reckon with when it comes to talk of town events. He has performed on platforms such as Ghana Meets Naija, Tidal Rave, Ghana DJs Awards, Red Room at VGMA and the Switch Concerts from Accra to Kwahu to Kumasi as well as being the main man behind the turntables at the various Hall Week parties.

Throwing more light  on his life, the host of Starr Music Lan said “I made my name on the streets before I joined radio because I wanted to be very good at what I do. I’m a go getter and I knew what I wanted when I decided to make time for this craft,” he stated.

The perception that DJs are womanisers is one that the former Executive Assistant at Lynx Entertainment considers as unfortunate. “The truth is that women love men who can move them and the job of the DJ is to make people happy including women. That doesn’t mean we are womanisers because ladies tend to love musicians, actors because their works have impact on their emotions,” he stated.

Working on being a Chartered accountant, Dj Vyrusky who recently completed his Masters Degree in Business Administration (Insurance) said he has plans of establishing a DJ school to groom young talents for the industry. He also advocated for the creation of a union for DJS to streamline their operations and ensure professionalism.

According to the native of Aburi and Asamankese, many people have contributed to building the Vyrusky brand and the young man is full of praise for his family, the Lynx Entertainment family, SM Family, DJ Master Jay and the Echo company for giving him the opportunity to hone his skills.
