Companies that were also tipped to occupy top spots in the list were either found underground or totally absent while those that were rarely expected rather made it into the list.

The club is a list of the 100 most prestigious business entities in the country, ranked in order of their dominance, level of profitability and how they excelled in their respective sectors of operations in the previous fiscal year.

It is often selected by a team of experts and captains of industry under the auspices of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC), the body that scouts for investments for the country.

On the top spot in this year's list, announced on October 18, was indigenous mobile phone and computer assembling company, rlg Communications, followed by Goldfields Ghana Limited, Enterprise Life Assurance Company Limited (ELAC), PBC Limited and MacDan Shipping Company Limited in that order.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited, another indigenous business that was tipped to  occupy an enviable spot was, however, missing in the list.

The same applied to other big names such as Olam Ghana Limited, a soft commodity exporter; Unilever Ghana Limited, a fast moving consumer manufacturer; PZ Cussons Ghana Limited, Ayrton Drug Manufacturing Limited, a pharmaceuticals manufacturer; NSIA Ghana Insurance Limited, and ProCredit Savings and Loans Limited, among others.

These companies were in the list in 2011 but could not maintain their existence in it in the 2012 edition.

Surprise rankings

rlg Communications, which was declared the premier company on the club, was number two in 2011 while PBC Limited, which was number one in the previous rankings, slipped to number four  in the 2012 edition.

Goldfields Ghana Limited, which was number seven in the 2011 rankings, however, moved up to number two, with Enterprise Life Assurance Company Limited (ELAC) and Kasapreko Company Limited, (KCL) maintaining their number three and six spots respectively.

Goldfields was, however, adjudged the leading tax payer and largest growing company in the country in 2012.

MacDan Shipping Company Limited, which was on the 51st spot in the 2011 rankings moved up to the fifth position. It also displaced UT Collections, Jislah Financial Services and rlg Communications as the fastest growing companies in the year under review.

PBC and IPMC were adjudged the leaders in the Agribusiness and ICT education respectively.

Multipro Private Limited, importers of indomie, took the best entrant spot, having made it to the number eight position and into the club for the first time.

Other surprise entrants in the 2012 listings included First Capital Plus Savings and Loans (10), Access Bank Ghana Limited (21), Enterprise Insurance Company (55), Sahel-Sahara Bank (61), Wapic Insurance (60) and the Graphic Communications Group Limited (88).

Companies in the financial service sectors dominated the list with over 60 entries. Out of this, about 20 of them were rural banks and most of those rural banks were ranked higher than some multinationals such as: Guinness Ghana Brewery Limited, Stanbic Bank Ghana and Latex Foam Ghana Limited.

This year's event was the 13th edition and was on the theme: 'good corporate governance, innovation and entrepreneurship.' It was graced by former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.
