Give importers more 'space' to clear vehicles at ports - Carl Wilson

A former chairman of the Confiscated Vehicles Allocation Committee (CVC) during the presidency of John Evans Atta Mills, Carl Wilson, is advocating an extension in the duration given to importers to clear their vehicles from the ports.

According to him, it is wrong for the government to be seizing people's vehicles because they are unable to clear it from the port within a short period.

To him, the 60 days ultimatum given to importers is too short.

Speaking to Graphic Online, Mr Wilson suggested that the current 60 days should be extended to four months.

His argument is that many importers go through a lot of stress and hence confiscating their vehicles within such short periods overburden them.

“I have lived in abroad. I know what it is to suffer to buy a car and send it home,” he said, arguing that although Customs laws give 60 days, he extended the duration under his administration sometimes to 180 days so that it could give the opportunity to the people who brought the cars to clear them.
