Awards for players in construction sector launched

An awards scheme to recognise the contributions of the construction industry to the development of the economy has been launched in Accra.

To be organised every two years, the scheme is an initiative of Image Consortium Limited, a Ghanaian company that focuses on event and marketing communications.

Dubbed: ‘City Construction and Property (CCP) Awards,’ the event is expected to serve as a platform where companies and individuals will be honoured for their accomplishments and strides in Ghana’s construction industry.

The maiden edition is expected to be held in April 13, next year, on the theme, ‘Conceive, Construct, Conserve.’

Launching the awards, the Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Eugene Boakye Antwi, stated that the award encapsulated the entire building experience and provided opportunity for dissecting all the major parts of the building process and rewarding them individually.

“Housing is a component of infrastructure that promotes human dignity. The government has over the years demonstrated keen interest in ensuring that the good people of Ghana have access to decent, adequate and affordable housing.

“Available data puts Ghana’s housing deficit in excess of 1.7 million housing units. To address this deficit, there is the need for a minimum annual delivery of about 85,000 housing units over the next 20 years,” he said.

According to him, the government recognised the tireless inputs of all stakeholders in making the living conditions of Ghanaians comfortable.

He indicated that the government was committed to supporting and motivating the gallant building professionals in the country as part of measures to help grow the industry.

Awards categories

The Chairman for the event, Mr Simon Dornoo, said the activities of the industry could not be taken for granted, especially where Ghana was on the path of development.

He said the categories to be awarded include residential buildings, recreational buildings, rural housing, public buildings and commercial buildings.

The Executive Director of Image Consortium, Mrs Eugenia France, underscored the need for the building construction industry to be recognised.

“The building construction and properties sector deserves an award scheme to recognise their hard-working professionals and entrepreneurs who we call craft masters, and are making great strides,” she said.

She added that in line with their quest for organisational excellence in the selection of awards, categories, awards criteria and eventual awardees would be handled by a respected adjudication panel, who would take a lot of things into consideration, especially innovative designs, efficient utilisation of land space and long-lasting buildings that have stood the test of time.
