Air Namibia to continue Accra -Windhoek route

The government of Namibia has overturned an earlier decision by the board of directors of that country's national carrier, Air Namibia, to fold up its Accra-Windhoek route.

Consequently, the airline would continue operations from Ghana to Namibia beyond April 11, 2013, which was initially seen as the last day of Air Namibia’s operations on that route.

The Country Manager of the airline, Mr Peter O. Addai, announced this at a news conference in Accra.

Air Namibia’s board in the last quarter of last year directed the Ghana office not to make sales to customers wishing to use its services after April 11 this year. That followed the board’s decision to stop operations on the Accra-Windhoek route.

Air Namibia entered the Ghana market three years ago and its country manager said patronage had been on a consistent rise due to the efficient services offered.

The airline was doing an average of 70 to 80 per cent load capacity prior to the direction from the board to collapse the route, Mr Addai said.

“I was, therefore, not surprised that the biggest shareholder of the company – the Namibian government – saw it prudent to continue operations on the route,” Mr Addai told the Daily Graphic.

He admitted that the airline had lost some customers due to earlier communications that it was folding up the Accra-Windhoek route but added that its distinct service would help bring more customers.

Mr Addai said the airline was running some promotions as part of efforts aimed at reviving the route and attracting more customers.

Air Namibia is among the few state-owned airlines in Africa that have survived the test of time under government ownership. It was formed in 1946 and started operations in the country in mid 2010.

It currently flies thrice a week on the Accra-Windhoek route.
