Tennis: 4 Garrison thrill Cape Coast fans

The invincibility of Kumasi-based 4 Garrison Officers Mess Tennis Club was nearly broken at this year’s Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast last weekend when they were held to a 6-6 drawn game by the Hill Club before a packed crowd.

Led by captain of the club, S. S. Abebe, 4 Garrison thrilled the home fans with brilliant tennis but failed to translate their dominance over the Hill Club after completely annihilating them (Hill Club) in a first leg clash in Kumasi.

After a rather blistering start 4 Garrison, which paraded a crack team, fumbled to allow their host  to equal the scores.

In the singles competition, Baba Zakari of 4 Garrison set the ball rolling with a complete bashing of Abodwe Heckson, overpowering him with a 7-1 scoreline.

However, Dr Abraham Oppong of 4 Garrison failed to maintain the momentum set by Baba when he succumbed 4-7 to Emmanuel Alibah of Hill Club.

Oppong’s loss demoralised the team and led to Francis Akpese also losing to Andrews Adu Appiah of Hill Club 1-7. Joseph Yeboah Kodie and Nii Kwei Kussachin of 4 Garrison also lost in the successive sessions.

The visiting team made amends by winning four out of the six of the doubles to equal the scores.

Speaking after the tournament, the President of 4 Garrison Club, Samuel Ampadu-Kyei expressed appreciation to the host club for the stiff competition and the relationship.

The Chairman of Hill Club, Frank Koufie, promised a keener competition to overturn their first leg loss in Kumasi early this year.
