Oddoye memorial tennis tourney to tap talents

The first edition of the G.T. Oddoye memorial Junior Open Tennis Championship, designed to honour the late Gottfried Tawia Oddoye, former chairman of the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), is scheduled for the Accra Lawn Tennis Club (ALTC). from Monday, December 19,  to Saturday, December 24.

The championship, organised by the Ghana Tennis Federation and the Accra Lawn Tennis Club, in conjuction with the Oddoye Family at Osu, is expected to tap talents and  nurture the skills of juvenile players in the country, while challenging them to focus on their education.

Categories to be competed for include male and female Under-10, 12, 14 and 16. Those who excel in the tournament  would be selected and groomed by experienced coaches to be star players.

Dr Adrian Nii Odoi Oddoye, first son of the late G.T. Oddoye, told the Daily Graphic that  the tournament would be institutionalised on the calendar of the ALTC and the GTF, as their  contributions to develop the sport.

“Myself and five of my siblings have decided to come together and roll out the annual memorial tournament not only to honour our late father, but also to help raise budding tennis stars who will raise high the flag of the country at the international level,” he stressed.

Dr Oddoye said the long- term plan was to set up a tennis academy to effectively raise the next generation of tennis stars.

At stake are cash prizes, trophies, medals and tennis equipment.
