Who leads Ghana athletics ; For next four years

All roads lead to the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium tomorrow where Ghana’s athletics chiefs will congregate to elect new executives to steer the affairs of the once dominant sport for the next four years.

Tomorrow’s congress of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) is seen as a test case for the present administration led by Professor Francis Dodoo, who faces a strong challenge from a former national athletics chief, George Aldane-Lutterodt, and a former national athlete, Dr Silvanus Lamptey, for the position of the GAA president.

All attention will be on the presidential contest which looks like a straight battle between Prof. Dodoo and tough-talking Mr Aldane-Lutterodt, who has been citrical of the incumbent leadership of Ghana athletics for the flagging fortunes of the sport.

Prof Dodoo, one of Ghana’s marquee athletes, who won long jump gold at the 1987 All Africa Games, believes he is on the right path with, development plan to unearth a new generation of athletes to take over from big name stars who have gone past their prime.

However, his main challenger and a former GAA chairman, Lutterodt believes his is the best man to put the sport back on track by unifying the athletics front and injecting capital into the sport to ensure its rapid growth at the grassroot and national levels.

Other key positions being contested for are as follows — Vice-President: Mr Princeworth Anane-Asare and Reks Brobby;  Treasurer: Richard Agyapong and Marc Dzradosi; Organising Secretary: Samuel Ayer, Bawah Fuseini and Emmanuel Sekyere Arhin.
