We’re going for victory — Ayew

Black Stars stand-in captain, Andre Dede Ayew, says the team is set to win their remaining matches in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, and thus expect nothing short of victory in Saturday’s match against the Cranes of Uganda in Kampala.

Addressing the media after their first workout at the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday, Ayew expressed disappointment about the absence of the team’s substantive captain and Kwadwo Asamoah, who are both out due to injuries, but gave an assurance that the team would prepare very well to secure victory in Uganda.

The Olympique Marseille foward played down any form of pressure on him as captain but said he would prepare to lead the nation since the mantle had fallen on him as the longest serving player in the team, having played for the Stars since 2007 and made 57 international appearances.

Answering a question on concerns over the deadly Ebola virus disease and CAF’s insistence on hosting of the 2015 AFCON tournament, Ayew said the team was focused on their schedule while awaiting the announcement by CAF on the host nation.

“I would wish that the tournament was played because the game of football is very important for every country. Even if it’s postponed we will still train,” he said.

On a possible move from  Marseille to another club, during the January transfer window, the midfielder reiterated his commitment to the French Ligue 1 leaders.

“I am with Marseille till the end of the season, if there is anything we will know,” he said.

The Stars will have their second training session this morning and another one late afternoon before rounding off their workout in Accra tomorrow morning ahead of their departure for Kampala in the evening.

Coach Maxwell Konadu had the full complement of his invited players, who took part in yesterday’s training session, including Jonathan Mensah, John Boye, Andre Ayew, Abdul-Majeed Warris, Mubarak Wakaso, Harrison Afful, Christian Atsu, Stephen Adams, Fatau Dauda, Rabiu Mohammed, Baba Rahman Afriyie Acquah, Emmanuel Agyeman-Badu, Emmanuel Osei Banahene and goalkeepers Fatau Dauda, Razak Braimah and Stephen Adams.
