Veep, Otumfuo to open Sports Festival

The Vice-President, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will officially open the National Sports Festival at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi tomorrow.

The momentum for the games, being held for the first time in six years, began gathering yesterday with over 2,500 athletes warming up to compete for honours in 12 disciplines.

The disciplines include female soccer, boxing, athletics, handball, para-sports, table tennis and tennis. The rest are karate-do, judo, taekwondo, basketball, volleyball and badminton.

The event, aimed at resuscitating sports in the country, is being organised by the National Sports Authority (NSA).

Teams from the various regions have already converged at the games village — Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

According to Robert Sarfo Mensah, the Director General of the NSA, all is set for the games which is expected to unearth some talents for the national cause.

He expressed gratitude to the numerous sponsors who have supported the competition, including Goil Energy, Elsayus Cleaning Services, Shalina Healthcare, Angel Group of Companies and Stanbic Bank.
