Taekwondo: Cote d’Ivoire tops Ghana Int. Open Champs

Cote d' Ivoire was last Saturday adjudged winners of the 1st Ghana International Taekwondo Open Championship after winning 16 medals in both male and female divisions in the competition held at the DG Hathramani Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Ivorians won seven gold and bronze medals, as well as two silver with an impressive display. They claimed eight medals each in both male and female categories to beat second-placed Niger who took home 16 medals as well but failed to match the Ivorians with the gold medals.

Ghana finished fifth behind Mali (third) and Nigeria (fourth) with three silver and bronze medals in a less impressive performance as host nation.

Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, USA and Senegal completed the last four on sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th respectively, on the medal table.

Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) President, Frederick Lartey Otu, described the championship as successful and heaped praise on the Ghanaian team who, he said, impressed him despite their poor showing.

He noted that Ghana presented a youthful side who were competing at the international stage for the first time hence his decision to laud their performance.

However, the GTF boss expressed his disappointment at the inability of Ghanaian referees for failing to make the officiating requirement for the competition despite being trained by the federation.
