SWAG, clubs laud Nyantakyi

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and some premiership clubs yesterday joined numerous football-loving fans to pour out goodwill messages on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, after he was historically elected to represent Africa on the Executive Council of the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA).

Nyantakyi came second with 31 votes in yesterday’s polls; six behind winner Almamy Kabele Camara, who is CAF’s second vice president. He edged past Ahmad from Madagascar in the close-shave polls.

While some of the clubs, including Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Dreams FC and Wa All Stars took to their official websites to wish the GFA boss success prior to the elections, others released congratulatory messages after the elections yesterday.

A statement by Kotoko on its website signed by the Communications Manager, Kwaku Ahenkorah, said “we are of the firm opinion that Kwesi Nyantakyi has done well in Ghana and African football circles. His rise and progress have only been natural and it is our fervent hope that he comes out victorious on Thursday”.

“We are convinced that victory for the GFA President will not alone be a personal triumph but also a win for Ghana and African football at large. We, therefore, throw our weight solidly behind him and pray that he comes out with flying colours”, the letter further stated.

On their part, Dawu-based Dreams FC in a statement signed by the Administrative Manager, Ameenu Shardow, noted that “Ghana could not have had a better candidate than Kwesi Nyantakyi to vie for one of the two slots alloted Africa to serve on the Executive Committee of FIFA”.

“Your track record of leading the GFA to chalk many milestone successes provides a solid and enough basis on which to build a strong message to secure the required endorsement of the voting constituency to become victorious”.

Seth Panwum, the General Manager of Wa All Stars, said “we are proud to be associated with you and knowing your capabilities, we have no doubt that you will bring competence on board to uplift the image of Ghana whiles serving on the Executive Council. Indeed, we say once more congratulations”.

The SWAG statement also mentioned that the efforts of Nyantakyi towards the development of football in Ghana and the continent put him in a poll position to pick one of the two slots reserved for Africa.

"Having restored Ghana's name on the Executive Committee of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) after a long absence, the opportunity at FIFA provides him with another opportunity to project the name and flag of Ghana. We are convinced that you will chalk another significant milestone in the history of football in Ghana and Africa by winning the elections in Cairo, Egypt," the statement noted.

Nyantakyi, owner of Wa All Stars, passed the FIFA Integrity test last week to enable him to contest in the election and will now join 32 other members to form the FIFA Executive Council which replaces the old 24-member Executive Committee as part of the reforms at FIFA.
