Sports journalists schooled in cricket

A cricket seminar designed to educate sports journalists  on the rudiments  and rules of the game to make their reportage more appealing to readers has been held in Accra.

A total of 24 sports journalists participated in the seminar which was organised by the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA).

Addressing the participants,  the Vice president of GCA, Mr Kwame Asare,  said  “22 players play the game,  with 11 on each side on a rectangular field. It is officiated by two umpires”.

According to Mr Asare, the players are evenly dispersed across in the cricket oval, which has a ball and a bat.

He indicated that the one who throws the cricket ball  onto the field of play is referred to as the bowler, while that in the opposite direction is called batter.

He said for one to score, there should be a run, which involves either batting the ball beyond the cricket oval for six points at the edge of the oval, which is four points, or making a criss-crossing run when the ball is being batted for a point.

For his part, Mr James Morgan an executive board member, urged the media to make cricket a national pastime and popularise  it in Ghana.

He  said if well publicised,  cricket could be a massive source of jobs for the unemployed youth in the country.

Mr Henry Ackom, a fellow board member, stated that the game had now become popular in almost all parts of the country.
