Sports Cul votes US$44m for sports development

Sports Cul Ghana Limited, a sports management company formed in 2007, has voted a whopping US$44 million for sports development in the country for the next one year.

Speaking at a press conference on the premises of the firm at Adjiriganor in Accra yesterday, Dr Kwaku Ofosu Asare, a lecturer at the GIMPA Business School and communications director of Sports Cul, said the package would cover football, boxing and athletics, as well as a mouth-watering reward for sports heroes who lifted high the flag of Ghana in the past.

According to Dr Asare, the package would see the winner of the 2016/2017 Ghana Premier League receive US$400,000, US$300,000 for the first runner-up, while the second and third runners-up will each pocket US$250,000, in addition to the financial package from the organisers of the league.

He added that Premier League players would each receive GH¢2000 at the end of every month, while beach soccer, women football and Division One League players would take GH¢1,000 each monthly.

Sports Cul and their partners from the United Arab Emirates will also ensure that all stakeholders in football, including coaches, referees, match commissioners, security and media men will receive attractive allowances to help curtail undue interference by club officials.

The management firm, whose topmost priority is to improve the quality of the game in Ghana, will also see each premier league club having two modern pitches of international standards while DOL and female football clubs will have a pitch each.

On athletics, he said “funding has been identified as a great factor in the decline of athletics in Ghana so Sports Cul shall inject massive finances into the discipline and embark on talent hunt in the country”.

According to Dr Asare, Sports Cul, which is derived from sports and culture, focuses not only on bringing relief to Ghana’s sports but also seeks to promote Ghanaian culture.

Other members of the Sports Cul team include Maxwell Addo (General Manager), Eric B. Etuahene (Operations Manager), Emmanuel Kwame Asante (Finance Manager), Lord Asante (Protocol Officer) and Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi Bonte II (Board Member).

Dignataries who graced the occasion were former Black Stars players such as Ibrahim Sunday and Dan Owusu, Joseph Wellington and Sampson Quao from the Ghana Referees Association, Mr David Dontoh and Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi, who represented the musicians union as well as Madam Fredericka Davies from the National Sports Authority.
