‘Ref died of natural causes’

Lower division referee, Kwame Andoh-Kyei, died from natural causes, according to the autopsy report.

The 21-year-old referee died few days after suffering severe battering at the hands of angry fans during a third division game between Dompem Gold Stars and Naa Joe United at the Bordie park in the Western Region.

His death sparked off a debate about the resurgence of violence at football matches which resulted a threat by the Referees Association of Ghana to boycott matches at the lower divisions.

The Ghana Football Association ordered for an autopsy report before any action could be taken since the young referee did not die on the spot.

But after weeks of detailed scrutiny, a pathologist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Osei Sampane, has revealed that the referee died a natural death.

“From the autopsy report I have with me, the young man died a natural death,” Sampane staked.

At last Wednesday's Meet the Press in Accra, Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, condemned the assault on the late referee and charged the police to arrest and prosecute hooligans who took the law into their hands during sporting activities.

“The time has come for the police to arrest and prosecute hooligans who take the law into their hands during sporting activities”.
