Nunoo-Mensah defeats Prof. Dodoo in GOC polls

The president of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), Ben Nunoo-Mensah, has been elected as the new president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) at an electoral congress of the committee held yesterday at the Swiss Spirit Hotels and Suites Alisa (formerly Alisa Hotel) in Accra.

Mr Nunoo-Mensah, who contested the incumbent Prof. Francis Dodoo for the position, won with a 33-28 result from the total of 61 valid votes cast.

The keenly contested polls,  supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission of Ghana which was led by its Director of Electoral Services, Samuel Tettey, witnessed a lot of moments of anxiety, but finally came off after all the contentious issues had been resolved democratically.

The incumbent General Secretary, Richard Akpokavie, managed to shove off a stiff challenge from the president of the Ghana Cycling Association, Mohammed Sahnoon, by polling 36 votes as against 26 votes by his rival.

Mr Paul Atchoe, the president of the Ghana Volleyball Association contested against Dr Debora Cubagee, a long standing executive for the position of First Vice President, and won by 32 to 29 votes.

Dr Cubagee  had served under  both the B.T. Baba and the out-going Prof. Dodoo administration.

The Second vice president position was won by Michael Nunoo, while Evans Yeboah took the Third Vice President position.

Richmond Quarcoo, Frederick Lartey Otu and Theophilus Edzie were also elected to the positions of Assistant Secretary General, Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer respectively.
Significantly, Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Committee member, Leanier Addy won one of the five slots for Olympic Sports and will be the only female on the new GOC board with Dr Cubagee’s exit.

The four other representatives from Olympic Sports and One representative of Non-Olympic Sport, one representative of National Federation Affiliated to the GOC, and three other members were elected to bring the total number of executives elected to 15.

Professor Dodoo, in conceding defeat, called on the membership of the GOC to respect the decision of the delegates.

Mr Nunoo-Mensah, on his part, urged the members to come together as a united body to forge ahead to develop Ghana sports.

He expressed appreciation to the delegates for the honour and confidence reposed in him and his team and promised to work hard in the interest of Ghana sports.
