Norlympics taekwondo begins today

More than 20 taekwondo clubs and schools in the Ashanti, Volta and Northern regions have touched down in Accra ahead of the big martial arts event dubbed ‘Norlympics Takewondo Championship’ which commences today and climaxes tomorrow at the D.G.Hathiramani Sports Hall of the Accra Stadium.

They will be joined by their colleagues in Accra, including Jesus and Mary, Helga International, Crown Prince Academy and Donskido Club to do battle for honours in POOMSE - the basic rudiments of taekwondo and other martial arts techniques.

Contingents from Lome, Togo and Cotonou in Benin are also scheduled to arrive tonight for the biggest kids taekwondo event in the country which attracts kids between the ages of four and 16.

Kpogas Taekwondo Club from Togo, Komfo Anokye Club from Kumasi, Volta Club from Ho, Social Club from Kumasi and Cradle Star School are some of the school expected to arrive today for the tournament.

International taekwondo referee and chairman of the Greater Accra Taekwondo Association, Master Norbert Amefu, who initiated the competition, said it was aimed at tapping talents for  the national cause.

Master Amefu, who is also the president of the Norlympics Taekwondo Academy, organisers of the competition, told the Daily Graphic that in line with convention, veteran taekwondo experts would grace the occasion to mentor the kids and help hone their skills.

At stake are mouth-watering prizes, including a brand new bicycle for the male and female winners, undisclosed cash prizes, fridges, television sets, medals and a certificate of participation for the other winners.
