No outstanding golfer for 2013

Unlike the previous years, no golfer was outstanding in 2013, making it difficult for moninations to be made for the prestigious SWAG Golfer of the Year award.

The winners in all the competitions were scattered and none was able to win a particular event back-to-back.

From the 18th UT Tafo golf championship to the MTN competition also held at Tafo, the Lipton bi-monthly competition in Tema through to the Ghana Open, the winners had not been consistent.

But it was a good year for a few familiar faces, including professional golfer, Victor Brave Mensah, Peter Amenyo, Maxwell Bonsu, Mona Myers Lamptey, Florence Etwi Barimah and budding talents Vincent Atila.

Atila was, indeed the discovery of the year with his scintillating performances. The graduate from Accra Poly gave hope to the sport when he brushed aside all the big names to win the main men’s scratch event of the MTN CEO’s Invitational Golf competition at the Cocoa Research Institute at Tafo.

There were other known faces, who although, never won major silverwares, were consistent with their appearances on the courses throughout the year.

Among them was business mogul, Sam Jonah, who was arguably one of the most active players in 2013.

But one player who stunned everybody in the year was 85-year-old veteran golfer, Samuel Kofi Appiah, who won the senior division of the Ashfoam Monthly Medal golf competition in Kumasi.

His performance was not up to scratch though, but his endurance on the course, from teeing off to greens, was encouraging.

This year, the Tema Country Golf Course and Tafo have been the busiest venues with some exciting competitions. But a lot would need to be done to correct the erroneous impression that the sport is the preserve of the rich and affluent.
