Elmina Sea Lions and newcomers, Kumasi Sports Academy Ladies have taken this season’s National Women’s League (NWL) by storm and pose a real threat to the aspirations of the giants in the competition.

Not given a chance, Sea Lions, playing their second season in the competition, topped the southern zone at the end of the first round, while debutantes, Kumasi Sports Academy, are second in the northern zone, separated by only three points from leaders and defending champions, Ampem Darkoa.

Interestingly, former zonal champions, Fabulous Ladies, are third in the northern zone, while Hasaacas Ladies, three times national champions and four times southern zone champions, are perched at seventh position in that zone.

The performance of the  two relatively  new teams is a reflection of how strong this season’s competition has been so far, with no dull moment registered in the matches played from Day One to Day Seven.

Northern Ladies’ Mukarama Abdulai has raised the bar for the top scorers, as she registered five goals in one game in their 6-3 win against Real Upper Ladies and has thus overtaken Sports Academy’s Vivian Konadu Adjei on the top scorers’s chart.

While the northern zone could be a straight fight between Ampem Darkoa and Sports Academy, the challenge for the top position will be more stern in the southern zone with Sea Lions, Immigration, Lady Strikers, Immigration and Police Ladies all, pushing for the top spot, though the fight at the moment is a neck-and-neck contest between Sea Lions and Immigration, who both have 14 points , but separated by just a goal difference.

The results on Match Day Seven, further strengthened the contest as Sea Lions drew 1-1 away to Hasaacas Ladies, Immigration won 2-0 away against Holy Royals, Samaria and Police Ladies played to a 2-2 draw, and LadyStrikers won 2-1 against Soccer Intellectuals.

Ampem Darkoa came from behind to draw 2-2 away to Fabulous Ladies; Kumasi Sports Academy won 1-0 against Lepo Ladies and Prisons Ladies lost their home game 1-2 to Ashtown Ladies, while Northern Ladies’ 6-3 win against Real Upper Ladies rounded up the scores in the northern zone.

The NWL takes a two-week break with the second round resuming on the weekend of July 15-16.
