MTN FA Cup semis for Obuasi - Tamale to host grand finale

Defending league champions, Wa All Stars, have been handed a tough semi-final opponent after they were drawn against Hearts of Oak in the 2016/2017 MTN FA Cup competition.

At a live draw held yesterday at the M Plaza Hotel, two-time champions, Medeama, were also pitted against Asante Kotoko in a semi-final double-header slated for Sunday, October 1 at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

Christened "Super Sunday" by the FA Cup Committee (FACC), the interesting fixtures which will kick off at 3:15pm and 5:15pm respectively are expected to offer spectators a feel of competitive and exciting football gala like the preceding events.

Speaking at the draw, the chairman of the FACC, Mr Kurt Edwin Simon Okraku, announced that the grand finale is also scheduled to come off at the Tamale Sports Stadium in the Northern Region on Sunday, October 29.

"After a series of consultations with stakeholders, the FA Cup Committee had decided on the Len Clay Stadium at Obuasi for the semi-final games, while the grand finale will be played at the Tamale Sports Stadium."

"The FA believes the venue for the grand finale will be most suitable for the dream of seeing thousands of people trooping to the stadium. We are looking forward to a finale that will once again send a big statement to Africa that our local league is still alive and that we have talents which, when harnessed, will see quality representing Ghana all the time," he said.

He added that the winner of the coveted cup would receive GH¢50,000 as cash prize, a trophy and GH¢1,000 worth of MTN credit cards, while the runner-up would take home GH¢15,000.

Each of the four teams will receive an appearance fee of GH¢75,000, while the team which will eventually represent Ghana at the CAF Confederation Cup will also receive GH¢100,000 as preparation fee. All the semi-finalists will also receive GHc1,000 worth of MTN airtime.

As a top-up, the Most Promising Player, Best Player and the Top Scorer of the tournament will be rewarded with a fully-paid trip to Hungary, courtesy Nii Cudjoe and Associates Company Limited.
