MTN FA Cup: Can Okwawu dump Medeama

Last year winners of the MTN FA Cup, Medeama SC, continue their struggle of defending the trophy when they travel to face Division One side Okwawu United at Nkawkaw on Sunday for the round 16th stage.

The Tarkwa-based Club faces a tough one in this competition even though they would be boosted by their CAF Confederations Cup triumph over Panthers FC of Equatorial Guinea but the former Premier League side will be seeking to make amends after their defeat in the Divison One League to Mighty Jets last Sunday.

On paper Medeama SC remain favourites of this tie as they are enjoying a good run under coach Carlos Roberto Paullet but Okwawu United will hope to be powered by their 3-2 win over Sampa United in the Round of 32 stage of the competition to replicate that feat.

In the other pairings, First Capital Plus Premier League leaders, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, will be pleased to welcome Second Division side, Istanbul FC to Kumasi as they seek to avoid last year’s final defeat to winners Medeama SC knowing very well that nothing but a win will see them through to the quarter finals of the competition.

However, the visitors will be looking forward to upsetting the Porcupine Warriors on their own back yard knowing very well the daunting task that awaits them at the Ashanti Regional capital on Sunday.

Surprisingly after having been dumped from the CAF Champions League by BYC in Liberia last Sunday, the Porcupine Warriors are now left with the First Capital Plus Premier League and the MTN FA Cup to battle for and a slip will end their FA Cup title ambitions.

Elsewhere, Berekum Chelsea after qualifying into the next stage of the CAF Champions League will play host to Inter-Allies with the Berekum side seeking home comfort to progress into the next stage.

Sekondi Hasaacas will play host to Bibiani Gold Stars in a derby match of the Brong-Ahafo Region while Ashgold FC welcome Tudu Mighty Jet to Obuasi, Feyenoord Academy will engage New Edubiase FC.
