Medeama seek home win over Zesco

Debutants Medeama SC continue their search for a slice of history in the CAF Confederation Cup tomorrow on home soil as they welcome Zambian side Zesco United in the first leg of their one-eighth encounter at the Sekondi Stadium at Essipon.

The Yellow-and-Mauves, as Medeama are affectionately called, will seek to dominate this first tie for a convincing victory in order to lessen the pressure on them in the return leg and make qualification to the next round easier.

After eliminating Panthers FC of Equatorial Guinea on an impressive aggregate of 4-1 and edging out Moroccan side MAS Fes on 4-2 in the preliminary stage, Medeama face probably their strongest test yet against the three-time Zambian champions, a club owned by the state electricity supplier.

In their quest to get far in a competition first won in 2004 by Accra Hearts of Oak, the Peruvian coach of Medeama, Carlos Roberto Paulette, is aware of the pressure to succeed and make Ghana proud as the last man standing at continental level this year, after the early exit of  Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Berekum Chelsea and Ebusua Dwarfs who were all ‘dumped out’ of their various African competitions.

Carlos Paulette will have to mastermind a massive win against the visitors who reached this stage after eliminating Ferroviario da Beira of Mozambique at the Mwanawasa Stadium after being held to a goalless draw in their first leg in Mozambique.

After drawing a bye in the first round of the competition, coach Tenant Chembo led Zesco to a lone goal victory over the Mozambicans at home to book a date with the Ghanaians

Coach Paulette will count on the trio — Theophilus Anobaah, Kabiru Moro and Godbless Asamoah — to put up their best ever performance if they are to carry the day against Zesco tomorrow.
