McDan Open Tennis final today - Adegoke, MacLeod in all-Nigerian affair

For the second consecutive year, the McDan West African Open women's title will be heading to Nigeria after Sarah Adegoke and youngster Angel MacLeod completed an all-Nigerian cast for the final.

There was a touch of fortune about 16-year-old Macleod's progression to the final yesterday at the Accra Sports Stadium as her Nigerian compatriot, Lizzy Airhunmwunde, was forced to retire with a neck injury. Before a heartbroken Airhunmwunde retired, she was in a comfortable 5-3 lead.

MacLeod, in an interview after her unexpected victory, admitted that she was fortunate to progress but would make the most of the golden opportunity by stunning defending champion Adegoke in today's final.

The two Nigerians will go into battle today in the women's final for a $1,000 cash prize, as well as a glittering silver trophy.

Adegoke continued her imperious run to the final, brushing aside a feeble challenge from former Ghana number one, Emma Cudjoe, with a 6-0, 6-1 result.

Home favourite and 2014 McDan Open Champion, Jeff Bagerbaseh, was upset by Beninois star Felix Hounkpevi in the first men's semi-final yesterday.

Hounkpevi won 6-3, 6-2 to progress to the final against top seed, Thomas Setodji, who defeated Wisdom Na-Ajrago 6-3, 6-0 in yesterday’s other semis clash.
