McDan Junior Tennis Open Championship set for August 21

The Chief Executive Officer of the McDan Group of Companies, Dr Daniel McKorley has redeemed a pledge made to the Ghana Tennis Federation to organise a junior tennis competition before the end of the year.

Dr McKorley redeemed his pledge on Wednesday with the launch of the inaugural McDan Junior Tennis Open Championship on Wednesday at the Tennis Courts of the Accra Sports Stadium. The competition is scheduled to run between August 21-26 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Dr McKorley was not present at the launch because of other commitments but the Tournament Director, Nathaniel Attoh said the competition reserved for children aged between 12-16years is part of efforts secure the future of Ghana tennis.

He also expressed disappointment that no Ghanaian is ranked among the top 300 in the World Tennis Federation (WTF)rankings, stressing that efforts must be made to identify and groom talents from a young age to breach that barrier.

“We need good foundation, and this is exactly what McDan Group and Dr Dan Mckorley is doing in developing and promoting tennis in Ghana,” he said.

The Head of Sales and Marketing of the McDan Group, Obodai Sai said Dr McKorley was looking forward to an exciting tournament and committed to the development of the sport in the country.

He said: "Dr McKorley made this promise at the McDan Open Championship in April and he has come through to redeem his pledge, we are all looking forward to exciting tennis starting Monday".

The President of the Ghana Tennis Federation, Isaac Aboagye Duah explained that there will be contests in male and female categories for Under-12, Under 14 and Under-16 tennis categories.

He added that prizes at stake for the youngsters will include tennis equipment as well as educational scholarships.
