Maidens get $1,000 each

Players of the national Under-17 women's football team, the Black Maidens, have been given $1,000 each as part payment of their outstanding monies due them, with the promise of the remaining arrears being paid sometime next week.

Yesterday, the Maidens, who returned from the ongoing FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup (WWC) in Jordan last Saturday after losing to North Korea in the quarter-finals, were reluctant to leave their hotel without any payment despite assurances from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) that it was going to ensure that whatever was due them would be paid.

In a bid to avoid what happened when the Black Queens returned from the All Africa Games in Congo last year, refusing to leave their hotel until all monies owed them were paid, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which until then had been mute about the whole issue, moved in to offer the $1,000 to the players and technical team, but the management members who travelled with the team were left out.

The Maidens are owed in excess of $9,000, being cost accrued from their qualification to the WWC, their per diem for four weeks during their participation in the competition, as well as their qualification to the quarter-finals.

Asked when they were told the outstanding bonuses would be settled, the players said, they were told 'next week' without a definite day or time.
