Introduce Olympic Day celebration into school activities - Nunoo Mensah appeals to GES

The President of Olympic Committee, Ben Nunoo Mensah, has urged the Ghana Education Service to make the Olympic Day celebration a part of school activities.

This, he says will enable the GOC teach youngsters the importance of adopting healthy lifestyles, as well as representing the nation at the highest level of sports.

He made this known during the 2017 Olympic Day celebration which was observed last Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

"It would also ensure that the spirit of Olympism is spread across the board, especially for the younger generation", he explained.

Mr Nunoo Mensah expressed gratitude to keep fit clubs, government officials, sportsmen and sportswomen, as well as the general public for their tremendous support during the celebrations.

He noted that about four million people across the world would be celebrating the Olympic Day and Ghana had ensured that this year's event received the needed attention and patronage.

He explained that the event was also aimed at inspiring friendship through sports to overcome political, social and economic barriers in  Ghana.

This year's event, held under the theme, "Move, Learn and Discover", was marked with a walk from Martyrs of Uganda at Mamprobi, through the principal streets of Accra, and ended at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The hundreds who braved the rains to participate in the walk were also introduced to various sporting disciplines practised in the country with an exhibition of sport, including taekwondo, weightlifting, arm wrestling, lawn tennis and table tennis.

Also in attendance, was the Deputy Minister for Health, Tina Mensah, who encouraged the public to engage in physical activities regularly in order to avoid diseases caused by lack of physical activities.

She also commended the organisers for ensuring a very successful event and called on the GOC to hold such events regularly.

The Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Sarfo Mensah who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, pledged the continuous support of his outfit for the Ghana Olympic Committee.
