Hearts silence Tema Youth

A sensational strike by Accra Hearts of Oak skipper, Thomas Abbey, yesterday gave his side a deserving 3-1 victory over Tema Youth at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Abbey scored a world class goal to put the icing on the cake after his 30th minute stike from the penalty spot and Kwame Kizito’s header in the 57th minute gave the home side a good cushion as they dominated the game from the blast of the whistle.

It took Isaac Mensah just under a minute to signal Hearts’ intent to win when he forced a fine save from Tema Youth goalkeeper, Stephen Kwaku, after Patrick Razak burst from the flanks to fire at goal.

By the 15th minute, Razak had fluffed several opportunities, including chances in the 11th minute and the 14th minute when he had only the goalkeeper at his mercy.

Tema Youth eventually caved in under pressure in the 30th minute when centre-back, Baba Musa, handled a cross from Razak. Abbey fired the resultant spot kick into the top corner of the net as goalkeeper Kwaku dived to the opposite direction to give the sparse crowd something to cheer about.

The visiting side hardly recovered from that opener until midfielder, Gabriel Leveh, gave his side a ray of hope when he danced his way into the Hearts’ penalty box but Vincent Atinga was on hand to clear the ball from danger.

After recess, Hearts maintained their dominance and 12 minutes into the half, playmaker Cobbinah split open the Tema Youth defence and spotted unmarked Razak whose shot was pushed back into play by goalkeeper Kwaku but Kizito arrived on time to head the ball into the net to give the Phobians a 2-0 lead.

From that moment, it appeared the Tema lads would return with a cricket scoreline until the 85th minute when a clumsy tackle by Hearts’Leonard Tawiah on Tawfik Mohammed earned the visitors a penalty which was converted by Joseph Paintsil.

Hearts ensured the visitors went home without a point when Abbey provided the icing on the cake on the stroke of full time with his second goal after he dribbled past a host of defenders from the left flank into the box to fire past Tema Youth goalkeeper.

Elmina Sharks bite again

Elmina Sharks made it four wins out of four games with a 2-1 victory over Bechem United at the Papa Kwesi Ndoum Stadium, Elmina.

A low shot by midfielder Felix Addo in the seventh minute beat goalkeeper Prince Asempa in the near post to give Sharks the lead.

The home side did not drop their guard and maintained the heat on the visiting side until Addo secured victory with his second goal of the afternoon on the stroke of full time.

A minute into added-on time, Sadiq Abubakar scored a consolation goal for Bechem.

• At the Carl Reindorf Park at Dansoman, a late strike by Ernest Papa Arko secured maximum points for Liberty Professionals who defeated AshantiGold 1-0,while Accra Great Olympics remained in the 15th position, despite beating Inter Allies 1-0 at the El Wak Stadium.
