GWF withdraws suit against GOC

The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) has withdrawn a lawsuit it filed against the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and its leadership to pave the way for an electoral congress as stipulated in the November 23, 2015 resolution passed by the general assembly.

Also affected in the joint suit were the GOC president, Prof Francis Dodoo, and his Secretary General, Richard Akpokavie.

A source close to the office of the lawyers of the plaintiff told the Graphic Sports that the instructions for the discontinuance of the case was given because their client believed that even though the defendants were aware that one of the reliefs being sought for was for them (the defendants) to implement Congress’s resolution of November 23, 2015, they (the defendants) were using the court case as an alibi for not holding the electoral congress.

A notice of discontinuance dated October 6, 2016 sighted by this paper stated that, “Please take notice that the plaintiff herein wholly discontinues this action against all the defendants herein with liberty to apply.”

The GWF in July this year filed a motion at an Accra High Court seeking for an order to enforce a resolution passed by the general assembly to compel the GOC leadership to hold an electoral congress immediately after the Olympic Games in Rio and to synchronise the GOC calendar with the rest of the world.

But the GOC had been adamant since the curtain was drawn on the Rio Olympiad, with one of the reasons for the delay being that it could not take certain actions because of the GWF’s court action.
