Ghana to host Queen’s Baton Relay Jan 3

 

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has expressed delight about the opportunity given Ghana to host the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay.He said the Relay would provide the opportunity to highlight and promote the city of Accra and the country’s athletes, following the international media attention that Ghana would receive.

Outlining the programme at a press briefing at the Media Centre of the Accra Sports Stadium last Monday, the  Minister stated that plans were  underway to celebrate the arrival of the Relay which would travel through places of interest in Accra and Ho.

He disclosed that the baton would be officially received by the Vice President, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, at a welcoming ceremony at the Flagstaff House on Saturday.

He said the Relay  would be carried by the Vice President to the Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice, the Chief of Staff, Ministers of State, High Commissioners, paramount chiefs,    chief executives of selected  State- Owned Enterprises,  top sports personalities , current and former athletes, as well as some selected children.

He, therefore, called for massive public support as the Baton Relay  tours two regions across  78 towns and villages in the country.

As part of its epic journey, the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay will traverse the length and breadth of the Commonwealth, visiting all 71 nations of the Commonwealth and covering 190,000 kilometres in 248 days.

The baton will travel through Asia, Oceania, Africa,  South America , the Caribbean, North  America  and Europe.

The baton will then complete its final part of the journey in Scotland where it will spend a total of 40 days.

The Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay will arrive in Ghana on Friday   from Sierra Leone. Ghana will provide an integral link when it welcomes the baton as part of the most engaging relay in history.

The baton is currently travelling through Vanuatu in the Asia Pacific and will arrive in  Sierra Leone on today.

The Queen’s Baton Relay has been the traditional curtain-raiser to the Commonwealth Games since the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games in Wales.

The Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay began at the Buckingham Palace on  October  9, 2013, when Her Majesty the Queen handed over the baton to begin its relay around the globe.
