Ghana Consular intervenes in Muntari saga

The  Honorary Consul of Ghana to Italy, Massimiliano Colasuonno Taricone, played an influential role in overturning the one match ban on former Black Stars player and Pescara midfielder, Sulley Muntari.

The Italy-based footballer was given a one match ban after walking away in protest when he was booked by the referee for protesting racial chants and prejudice against him during Seria A encounter against Cagliari a week ago.

In complete show of support for Muntari in the incident which attracted international reaction, the Consul met with the midfielder and assured him of Ghana's support and backing.

This was followed by a letter from the Consulate to the Italian Football Association in protest of the ban. Indeed, a letter signed by the Italian-born Ghanaian, Consular Massiliano Colasuonno Taricone, a copy of which the Daily Graphic has seen, urged the football administration to rescind its decision and overturn the suspension.

That, as well as the critical reaction the ban received, led to the Italian Football Association overturning the ban last Friday evening, but  Muntari played no role in Pescara’s 0-1 home loss to Crotone yesterday.

The Honorary Consul told the Daily Graphic that he just carried out his duty as was expected of him as  a Consular and expressed appreciation to the leaders of the Italian Football Association for paying attention to concerns of the world over what he described as ‘a senstive and delicate issue as racism.’

He lauded Muntari for standing to racism and fighting against it.

He also urged Ghanaians, particularly footballers living in Italy, not to hesistate to consult the Embassy or the representative bodies as the Consul in times of distress to assist them in finding the best solutions to any problem they face in Italy.
