GBA storms Fetu Afahye with title belts

This year’s Oguaa Fetu Afahye promises to be exceptional and memorable following the decision by the president of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Lawyer Peter Zwennes, to stage a boxing bill with three national title belts at stake.

The Central Regional GBA President, Mr Twintoh Walker, who doubles as the chairman of the National GBA Regional Outreach Committee, told the Daily Graphic that the promotion would be a departure from the situation where all boxing promotions were usually centred in Accra, hence a directive by Mr Zwennes to all national title holders to prepare to defend their titles anywhere in the country.

He said his outfit, in collaboration with Cape Coast Youth Development Association, Oguaa Fetu Afahye Planning Committee, Walker-King Sports Consult (Central Regional GBA licensed promoter) and the Regional Sports Authority, had resolved to revive boxing in the metropolis by including the sport in the activities marking this year’s Oguaa Fetu Afahye.

The event, dubbed: “Rescue the perishing”, is designed to rediscover growth and development and make boxing a permanent feature in the Cape Coast Metropolis in particular and the region at large,” Mr Walker disclosed.

Mr Walker said the event was scheduled for Friday, September 1 on the eve of the Festival at London Bridge, located in the centre of the town. The programme line-up includes kid boxers between the ages of four and six from Accra engaging with the Cape Coast Kids Team.

Women boxers from Accra will also exhibit their skills on the bill, while Central Regional boxing team will clash with their Brong Ahafo counterparts in an amateur contest.

The highlight will be the professional bouts which will see national champions defending their titles, while vacant titles will also be competed for by contenders who will be named by the GBA Rating Committee headed by Mr J.A. Annan.

Those expected to grace the occasion will be the Youth and Sports Minister, GBA Board members, Professor Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey (GBA Technical Director), the Central Regional Minister, Metro Chief Executive, C.C.M.A, MPs for the North and South constituencies and chiefs of the Oguaa Traditional Council.

Mr Walker appealed to corporate bodies and individual philanthropists to donate boxing equipment and other forms of sponsorship to the GBA and its regional bodies.
