Double joy for Schlupp: Wins Best Player award, Leicester jump relegation

This weekend has been a double joy for Jeffrey Schlupp as his Lecister City avoided relegation from the Premier League while on a personal note, he was voted the club’s Best Young Player and the Players’ Best Player for the season.

Leicester City’s draw away at Burnley this weekend, coupled with defeats for Newcastle United and Hull City, means that the Foxes and their Ghanaian left-back  Schlupp have confirmed their place in next year’s Premier League, finishing 14th on the league table.

It has been a topsy-turvy run for the Foxes, who started off so well, but slipped along the way. They walked, ran, jumped, danced and demonstrated that they truly belong in England’s elite division and a league considered, by many, to be the best in the world.

Some of their statistics this season underpin their remarkable revival and honestly, their pretty shabby form for the first two thirds of the season. By the beginning of April, few—and only perhaps the most ardent of Foxes fans—would have given them much chance of survival.

Nigel Pearson’s side celebrated their successful escape from the relegation zone with a night out in an East Midlands nightclub last Saturday evening. They then had their achievements recognised at the club’s end of season awards evening.

Celebrating their narrow escape from relegation with his teamates, Schlupp capped it with the club’s Young Player of the Year at the awards ceremony.

Schlupp claimed two of the club’s awards.

He was named young player of the year, beating off competition from Matty James and Andrej Kramaric, while also picked up the player’s player of the year prize—ahead of Leonardo Ulloa and Jamie Vardy.

Esteban Cambiasso was named player of the year, ahead of Jamie Vardy and Kasper Schmeichel, while David Nugent picked up the goal of the year award. — PAS
