C.K. Akonnor returns to Ashgold - As new head coach

Ex-Ghana International C.K. Akonnor says he is excited about returning to occupy the vacant coaching job at Obuasi-based Ashantigold Football Club, where he made his name on the local scene as an emerging star in the 1990s.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports before emplaning to Obuasi yesterday, the former Hearts of Oak and Eleven Wise coach said he was more than ready to handle whatever challenges awaited him at Ashgold after having worked for the club in the past.

“We all know that the Ashgold we know in the past is not the same again, so I have that at the back of my mind. The main issue is with the playing body so it is important that I support them and encourage them to change their mindset and do well on the field of play, then everything will be fine.

“I am going there with the mindset to help the club escape relegation and I will not be doing this alone but together with my colleagues Augustine Arhinful and Sammy Adjei who have agreed to come on board,” he added.

C K, who was not ready to disclose his financial entitlements at his new club,  noted that he was expected to train with the team today since he would be in charge against Inter Allies at the El-Wak Stadium this weekend.

Touching on his sudden departure from Dreams FC, Coach Akonnor said he had the support and blessings of his former employers who had granted a request from Ashgold for his services, adding that he had no issues whatsoever with the management of the club and could return whenever he wished.

The former Black Stars captain has been with Dreams for three years, leading them to promotion in his first attempt.

Ashgold has played 11 games this season, won two, drawn two and recorded seven losses. They are perched at the bottom of the league table with eight points.
