Bonus ‘wahala’ rocks women’s teams

One year after winning their first gold at the 2015 All Africa Games, players and technical staff of Ghana's senior female team are still waiting for their winning bonus as well as their qualification bonus.

The triumphant Black Queens laid siege at their hotel in Accra on their return from Congo-Brazzaville over the unpaid bonuses, and only agreed to check out of the M-Plaza Hotel following an intervention by President John Dramani Mahama who promised to resolve the issue.

One year on, the Queens have stillnot had the chance to meet with the President as he promised, neither have they received their bonuses in an excess of $8,000 per player.

Also in arrears is the qualifying bonus for the team's double win over Tunisia which saw them qualify for the 2016 Africa Women's Championship to be held in Cameroun later this year.

The Queens, currently in camp preparing for the Cameroun competition, have lamented over their situation and pleaded with the President to honour his promise.

"Last year when we came back from Congo and protested about our shabby treatment over bonuses, the President called and urged us to go home with the promise of resolving the issue. Unfortunately, one year on, we are waiting to meet the  President or get our bonuses. This is not fair and we urge President Mahama to honour his promise to us," the players lamented to the Graphic Sports.

The Queens are not alone. The Under-20 side, Black Princesses, who also beat Equatorial Guinea in their final qualifier to book a place at the 2016 Women's World Cup in Papua New Guinea, are yet to receive their qualification bonus.
