Blind football: German national team manager holds training seminar in Accra

A total of 30 participants drawn from public universities have began a week-long training in the fundamental rules of blind football to help promote the sport in the country.

The workshop was organised at the D.G. Hathiramani Sports Hall of the Accra Stadium by the newly-formed Blind Football Federation for coaches, referees, players and support staff to promote the sport and to put in place a formidable team that will represent Ghana at  international tournaments in the future.

The participants were taken through basic rules of blind football on the first day and were exposed to the practical aspects of the sport on the second and final day.

Former Hearts of Oak national goalie, Ali Jarra was there to perform the kick-off ceremony to open the workshop, which had Prof Rolf Husmann and Mr Enrico Joebel, team manager and coach of the German Blind Football team respectively as course instructors.

The two German arrived in the country last week with Mr Kofi Osei, a Germany-based Ghanaian who features for the German Blind Football team, to promote the sport in the country.

Mr Enrico Joebel told the Graphic Sports that his goal of making grand steps in blind football in Ghana had been achieved as the participants at the workshop were enthusiastic about the sport and were yearning to learn more.

For his part, Mr Kofi Osei said he was thrilled by the performance of the players and encouraged them to work extra hard to form a great team to win laurels for Ghana at the upcoming African championship slated for October.

Among dignitaries at the workshop were the federation its president Mr Daniel Mensah, Bishop Adjah Coffie, president of the National Paralympic Committee; Mr Eric Kissie, president of the Ghana Blind Union Sports and Mr Frederick Assor, president of the International Blind Sports Association, English-Speaking Africa.
