Black Stars video analyst goes berserk

The video analyst for Black Stars, Gerard Nus, caused a stir at the Swiss Spirit Hotel and Suites Alisa Accra last Saturday when he refused to settle a debt of about GHc5,000 arising from his seven-week stay at the facility at North Ridge.

Nus had lodged at the hotel since Ghana returned from the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Gabon and refused to return to his native Spain until he received fully all unpaid bonuses owed him by the Ghana Football Association.

By the time he was ready to check out of the hotel last Saturday to emplane to Spain, having received $40,000 in separate payments by the GFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Nus had incurred extra debts of GHc5,000 which he refused to pay and insisted the FA bore those expenses arising from his use of bar facilities, laundry and telecommunications.

According to a GFA statement yesterday, the football governing body had agreed to pay for his accommodation and meals but made it clear to the Spaniard during a meeting last Thursday that he would have to pay the extras consumed.

However, drama unfolded at the hotel lobby last Saturday when Nus was checking out of the hotel for the Kotoka International Airport, his flight ticket-in-hand, and ready to catch his flight to Spain.

He went berserk when the hotel staff refused to allow him to leave until he fully settled his debts. The commotion forced the intervention of Alex Asante, the FA’s Deputy General Secretary in charge of International Relations, who impressed upon the video analyst to settle his debt. When all intervention failed, Nus was detained and missed his flight back to Spain, forcing him to pass the night at the hotel lobby.

It was not clear whether Nus had settled his debts at the time of going to press yesterday.

In fact, the Spaniard’s insistence on remaining in Accra until he received his money gained a lot of media attention after Nus, who was drafted by former Stars coach Avram Grant as part of his backroom staff, reported the GFA to the Spanish Embassy in Accra.

“On Thursday, during a meeting with GFA officials, he was reminded that he would pay for all the extra expenses he made during his stay at the hotel.

“Mr Nus even pleaded that the GFA should pay his extra expenses but was told that it was impossible.

“When hotel officials asked him to pay his extra expenses when checking out on Saturday night, he descended into a frenzy by causing disorder and verbally assaulting hotel staff and security, while causing discomfort for other guests in the hotel,” the GFA said in a statement.
