Black Stars B want more cash

Players and technical handlers of Black Stars B have received $3,000 each as the bonus for winning the 2017 West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup of Nations which was held in Cape Coast last month.

The amount represents their share of the $100,000 winning bonus recently promised by President Nana Akufo-Addo, leaving the $100,000 prize money being expected from WAFU.

The team earned $100,000 as prize money for winning the 16-nation tournament, aside from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s additional reward, of $100,000 for making Ghana proud.

According to sources close to the team, the Stars B are yet to receive a dime from the prize money from WAFU but have been asked by the GFA to wait until further notice.

“We received $3,000 each at the GFA Secretariat about five days ago and we were told that it was from the money the President promised us. So now we are waiting for our share of the prize money itself.

“As for the $100,000 prize money, they said it would come later but we don’t know when it will come,” the source said.

The local-based national side is yet to receive full payment from the GFA for achieving that feat, a development which has generated a lot of public discussions of late.

Earlier reports from the Stars B Management Committee indicated that the GFA was yet to cash the cheque after it had matured.

However, that did not go down well with the Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah, who complained about the GFA’s inability to sort out members of the Stars B after his outfit had released government’s cheque to them.

But Nii Komiete Doku, chairman of the Stars B Management Committee, confirmed the disbursement to the Graphic Sports yesterday but was reluctant to reveal the exact amount each member of the team received.

He said his outfit finally cashed the cheque last Wednesday and disbursed it to members of the team on Thursday and Friday.

“We sorted the players out last Thursday and Friday after receiving the money on Wednesday,” he said.
