Black Spikers vying for 2019 FIVB Volleyball World tourney in Japan

The national male volleyball team, the Black Spikers, have boosted their chances of qualifying to the FIVB Volleyball world championships in Japan in 2019 after winning a qualifying tournament in Niger last weekend.

The Spikers overcame a tough side from Nigeria with an emphatic 3-1 victory, defeated Cote d’Ivoire 3-0 before accounting for the host, Niger, 3-1 to gain nine points to win the tournament.

The four nation tournament saw Nigeria placing second with six points, Niger third with four points and Cote d’Ivoire fourth with no point.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic Mr Paul Atchoe, the President of the Ghana Volleyball Association (GVA) said the team would play for the final qualification phase in Egypt in October.

He expressed satisfaction about the performance of the team and assured of a place in Japan in 2019. He, therefore, appealed for state and corporate support to motivate the players to excel in the final qualification in Egypt.
