Bechem-WAFA playoff in danger

The sixth place playoff between Bechem United and WAFA slated for the new Cape Coast Stadium on Sunday is in danger following a threat by the former to withdraw from the match.

According to Bechem United, they will not be able to honour the match since the club broke camp at the end of the just-ended season.

The MTN FA Cup champions have since written officially to the organisers of the match, the Premier League Board (PLB), giving reasons why they would not be able to honour the game this Sunday.

In the said letter, Bechem United sought for the postponement of the match to a later date since the club had scheduled a thanksgiving service in Bechem this Sunday.

The chairman of the PLB, Mr Ashford Tettey Oku, acknowledged receipt of the letter yesterday but declined to comment on the next line of action by his outfit.

The PLB announced the playoff last week in a bid to determine the sixth position because the two clubs were tied on points and head-to-head at the end of the Premier League season.

The latest move was a sudden twist to the whole drama after both clubs had earlier agreed to honour the match on Sunday.

During separate interviews with the Graphic Sports earlier, officials of the two clubs had expressed their readiness to oblige the PLB’s request although they had to resort to some desperate measures to ensure that.

While Kingsley Owusu Achau, the CEO of Bechem United, agreed to honour the match, he said the only challenge was that the players were not in camp and that meant they had to quickly assemble some players to honour the game.

For his part, the Technical Director of WAFA, Sam Arday, gave the assurance that his side was ready to honour the match on Sunday.

He was confident that WAFA would finish above Bechem United, assuring that "we are ready to honour our match against Bechem on Sunday in order to finish sixth".

According to the GFA statutes, teams which tie on points and head-to-head record need a special playoff to break the tie.
