Basketball: Veteran coach Mathias Ocloo passes on

The Ghana Basketball Association (GBBA) has announced the death of celebrated veteran coach Mathias Ocloo. A statement signed by the GBBA president, David Addo Ashong, disclosed that Ocloo passed away  last Thursday morning at his residence at Dome, Accra.

He was 70.

He was recovering from an illness he had been battling with the past couple of months up until his demise.

"Ocloo was an iconic figure in basketball in Ghana and was indeed one of the pillars on which the game was built and continues to grow in Ghana today," the statement said.

"At the time of his passing, he was serving as the acting Chairman of the Ghana Basketball Referees Association as well as the coach of the St. Joseph’s CYO Basketball and of the St Mary’s High School in Accra.

"In addition to this, he previously coached the Senior Women’s National Basketball Team. He was also a team manager for the National Teams".

As an administrator, he was credited with establishing the Greater Accra Basketball League as well as the Inter City Games which involved Accra, Lome, Benin and Lagos.

His contributions to the development of basketball in Ghana was recognised in 2013 when he received a meritorious award for dedication and valour during the maiden edition of the Ghana Basketball Awards.
